You know "...that moment when you can open a book and sink into it and escape from the world..."? As an avid reader I know this feeling well, but sadly, some of my kids don't. You can help us get the books we desperately need!
These are kids who sometimes NEED to escape from their worlds, and books are just the ticket.
If I can provide even a brief hour of excitement and fun to these kids, a place for them to feel safe inside a good story that takes them all over the world, I will. The reality is that some of my kiddos don't eat unless they're at school. Some of them don't know how to do laundry and as a result don't often have clean clothes to wear to school. Some of them have holes in every pair of too-tight shoes they own. These are not the kids who have the luxury of going to a bookstore and buying something they want, neither are they the kids who very often have the luxury of taking a Saturday trip to the library. But, these ARE the kids who need that escape, that release that readers can feel when they fall into a good book. I love my children and I am determined to do what I can to make their lives brighter and their hopes and dreams more attainable.
My Project
Author Steven J. Carroll wrote City of Words last year. I contacted him about his novels and he has offered to SPEAK TO MY CLASSES through a video chat! We just need to read the book first so that the kiddos can formulate some good questions to ask the author. In addition to having a super cool chance to actually speak to the author, this dystopian novel set will enable my kiddos to learn about traditional elements of fiction such as plot, setting, theme, conflict, and characterization; it will also encourage deeper critical thinking and discussion about censorship, societal norms, and ethics, which we look forward to discussing with the author Mr. Steven Carroll.
When you donate to help us get this amazing resource, you are giving to help encourage critical thinking and instill in young people a love of reading.
You can also help to stir up meaningful discussions about what is right and wrong, societal expectations and norms, as well as what a world without these norms and humanitarian beliefs would be like.
