This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic kindergarten and transitional kindergarten (TK) students who come to school with many questions and eager to learn. They are inquisitive, playful, and kind. Unfortunately, many of them come from homes living below the poverty level. This makes it hard for their families to provide learning experiences that will nurture their curiosity.

For many, my classroom is their first school experience so I need to provide rich hands-on learning experiences that will ignite a love for learning.

Although they face many challenges, they come to school ready to soak up new knowledge!

My Project

The raised garden beds and soil I want to purchase will allow 80 kinder students to plant and harvest every school year! My students live in a large city surrounded by traffic and concrete! Many of them live in apartment buildings and can't experience the joy of playing in grass or planting at home.

After a parent converted an old crib into a raised garden bed, I got the idea of creating a "kinder garden" in a section of our empty playground.

The planters will be shared amongst the 4 kindergarten classrooms. Each class will decide what to plant and will be responsible for maintaining their garden bed. In addition, I will also teach my students how to make use of "trash" to compost. Through this they will learn about plant life cycles and ways to help the environment.
