My students need lab supplies like water analysis kits to to practice science in life and earth sciences. Thinking like a scientist requires hands on activities.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Geshke's classroom raised $545

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Bill Nye always said that every child is a scientist until middle school kicks in and note taking begins in earnest. Well not so when students are doing hands on science outside and in the "lab" of our school. Science is cool and keeping it hands on is a must!
Our School is in its 4th year as a Global Awareness Magnet.
As a small learning community located in Los Angeles, we serve 379 students (255 in 6-8) providing a quality education with a rigorous curriculum in all core academic subject areas with an emphasis on Global Awareness. Demographics in Middle school are 18% African Americans, 70% are Hispanic, 11% are White and 1% Other ethnicities. 84% of the student body is Title 1. Since it is a magnet, families from all over Los Angeles are bussed in.
Some kids ride the bus for three hours a day so they work hard just to get to school.
The school's property is adjacent to the Ballona Wetlands (1/2 mile), one of the most important wetland preserves in the world. The Ballona Creek drains the entire Los Angeles basin and empties into the Santa Monica Bay in Marina del Rey. The creek is designed to discharge to Santa Monica Bay approximately 71,400 cubic feet per second from a 50-year frequency storm event.
My Project
The sciences are underrepresented by Latino and African Americans, and in this global economy, science is key to the future in an ever changing world. Please help our amazing students keep inspired in science.
Sixth graders will collect water samples from the Venice canal and conduct monthly experiments for Marine estuaries. Funding will be used to purchase chemicals and student workbooks to serve as guides throughout the year.
Seventh graders will also do lab dissections. They study pre- biology this year and because of the limited time in each class, we need to try a more simple dissection. Understanding the eye is truly magical and allows the students to participate in a hands on lab that explores the human body.
Keeping science hands on is the key to making middle school students believe that they are capable of pursuing a career in science.
Science has been deemed to be integral for our future and these low income kids are part of the next generation of future thinkers and sustainable citizens.
These projects will integrate the need for students not only to understand scientific content but also to use that information and transform it into graphs & charts, written reports, verbal and technological presentations that focuses on real life problems inspiring future problem solvers. Please consider supporting them & their future.
