My Students

Throughout their four years at the Academy, students are encouraged to explore their own questions and to take ownership of their learning.

The learning students do at SLA extends far beyond the hours of the school day or the walls of our building.

They come from all over Philadelphia, where they embrace an education rooted in inquiry.

SLA is exceptional in many ways, but because we are a small school in a big city, we still face challenges in funding the programs our students crave and the activities in which they thrive.

My Project

The students in the 12th grade literature seminar, Being Human, do not shy away from challenging texts and relevant topics. They are unafraid to think deeply and critically about the way we function in the world we have made, and they grapple with large questions in literature and life in this course.

Citizen: An American Lyric will be an incredible asset to this course, as Claudia Rankine's poetry, prose, and visual images address issues of racism in our nation through everyday encounters in public and private life.

The beautiful writing, the complex range of expression, and the relevance of Rankine's words will unquestionably have an impact on students.
