This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The best way to learn science is through hands-on scientific inquiry. When students are encouraged to work through scientific problems, they access higher-ordered levels of thinking. Hands-on experimentation also helps learners make real-world connections to text book concepts. The students at our school come from a diversity of backgrounds, including disadvantaged socioeconomic situations. Many of our students are still learning English as a second language. Yet the only limit to their dreams is the limits imposed on them. These students, primarily seniors and a few exceptional juniors, are preparing to enter the world. Every student deserves a hands-on experience to make learning fun and engaging.
My Project
My students are mostly disadvantaged seniors who are preparing to choose their careers and paths in their life. My goal as a teacher is to give my students authentic hands-on experiences in science that connect to the real world. Using the supplies requested, students will be able to model blood flow through their own circulatory systems using a series of tubes and valves, and examine the inheritance of blood through an interactive blood typing lab. These fascinating yet complex topics are better understood through hands-on learning.
Through these labs, students will access higher-ordered thinking skills and gain invaluable experience in learning about the human body.
These students are preparing to enter the real world, and all too often they settle for less because of their circumstances. By offering authentic, challenging labs in a class that sets the foundation for fields in science, technology and medicine, these students will have an opportunity to be exposed to exciting materials that they will remember for years to come.
