Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what they will discover on their own for the day. I ask them, "What do you want to learn?" I want them to know that they are in charge of their learning and have the technology to find out and read about anything.
I teach in an urban low socioeconomic area.
All of our students are on free lunch. My students are humble and eager to learn. They don't have much sometimes at home, but they would give you anything they have to offer. They love school and they love the safe environment the school provides for them.
Many of my students sign up for after school programs, in which students are selected by lottery. Despite language barriers, financial status, a limited technology available at home and a highly populated school my students are eager to learn and do their best.
My Project
My students need a space where they can sit on the floor in a circle and build as a community of learners. For example, using the Responsive Classroom strategies such as having a morning meeting or at the end of the day a closing circle. In which everyone is seated everyone can see each other and allow for students to share and contribute to the conversation.
A circle carpet will provide a space for everyone to look at each other and hear what each other are saying during instruction, morning meetings, and closing circle time.
