My Students
Do you remember going to the computer lab as a child? Playing classic games such as Oregon Trail that promoted fun and learning? My students need 6 Chromebooks to play educational and fun games and learn computer skills that will help them in school and in life.
Many of my students don't have Internet access at home.
In fact, some of them don't even have a computer they can use for learning, research, or fun. I teach in a Title 1 school, and many of my students do not come to school with the basic supplies they need for learning, such as crayons, pencils, and notebooks. For many of them, the structure of the school day and the consistency of a classroom is a safe haven. I work very hard to create fun, engaging lessons that will keep my first graders eager to learn new things each day. These students love the opportunity to use the computer for learning. They are engaged in a way that a paper and pencil will never engage them, and they are learning at the same time. These computers can open up new worlds for my students that they would have never been exposed to otherwise. The opportunities for learning are endless!
My Project
I would like to purchase 6 Chromebooks for my classroom that my students can use to play educational games, use educational apps, and use programs such as Successmaker to learn in a fun, engaging way. With only 2 computers in my classroom, it is difficult to find the time for all 20 students to get on the computer without missing instructional time. Having Chromebooks in my classroom will allow a small group of students to do extension activities on the computer while another small group works with me and another small group works independently. Or a group of struggling students can use an educational website or app to practice math facts or sight words. The Chromebooks are small and lightweight, so they can be easily stored in the classroom and taken to a table or can sit in a child's lap. The long battery life means they don't need to be close to an outlet to be useful. These Chromebooks will offer my students flexibility in their learning, and me flexibility in my teaching.
We are moving into a world that is driven by computer.
We communicate by computer. We pay bills, make purchases, and do our jobs by computer. With the limited access to up to date technology my students have, they are already behind in their understanding of technology. The Chromebooks will help my students learn the skills necessary to succeed in our new technological world.
