My Students
My students are eager to become independent readers. We have computer programs that are individualized to meet their unique needs, but we are in need of additional computers to increase time spent on these programs
My students are 3rd-5th graders, living in various neighborhoods of Philadelphia, and attend a highly individualized and specialized public school program in the heart of Fairmount, Philadelphia, PA.
Some of my students are working on mastering basic phonetic skills, while others are learning to read for comprehension. They love to use the computer, and would benefit from more 1:1 time logged into their individualized reading accounts. In addition to working hard on their reading and math skills, my students love to cook (and eat) healthy food! Their favorite snack is carrots and hummus. They are anxious to dip some of the fresh vegetables growing in our school garden into our homemade hummus!
My Project
If given additional laptop computers, my students will have more 1:1 time on their individualized reading programs. The goal of our Life Skills program is to provide our students independence across all areas of life. Learning how to read independently is crucial in ensuring this goal. The research based reading programs we use are Lexia Reading, and Raz-kids.com.
Lexia stands as one of the most rigorously researched, independently evaluated, and respected reading programs in the world. In numerous studies published in peer-reviewed journals, Lexia has been found to accelerate the development of critical foundational literacy skills in the early grades.
Raz-Kids.com helps students improve their reading skills by:
Listening for modeled fluency,Reading for practice,Recording their reading,Checking comprehension with quizzes.
Donations to my project will help my students advance one or more grade levels within one school year.
Many of them are already 3 or more years behind. I am trying to catch them up as much as possible, so they are ready to move on to middle school. By donating to my project, you will be providing them with the gift of literacy.
