it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
My students are 12 young adults who have been diagnosed with varying forms of emotional disturbances who are on the cusp of gaining their high school diplomas. As part of their regular instruction, my students benefit from having the curricula tailored to their specific learning style. What is crazy about that, is sometimes, that can be three or four different lessons during one instructional period. With limited school budgets, this can be hard to achieve due to a lack of technology present within our classroom!
Within our current technology based world, our classroom should be bursting at the seams with technology. Due to restraints on the school budget though, unfortunately it is not. With most of my students on the cusp of graduation, it is integral that technology is infused into their everyday instruction. Furthermore, with a dynamic blend of learning styles present within each classroom, this technology would allow my students to get individually tailored lessons that suit their dynamic learning style!
In Their Own Words
Some of the best learning environments I have been in have had a lot of technology. Where I currently go to school, when I go to type up an assignment, sometimes the keyboard is missing a few letters, so instead of typing homeostasis, our classroom keyboard only allows us to type "homeotai", which makes my writing inaccurate. This can be very frustrating and can steer me away from trying to improve my typing skills.
The group of kids that I have in my class with Dr. L. are very dynamic. We have been in classes together for a while. When you get to know a kid for a period of time you know they learn different from you. Some of my friends need to see a video, or hear a discussion. Sometimes it is better for others to have a math concept broken down on Khan Academy. We even have some students who benefit from completing all work typed on a computer. With that, it hurts us when we only have one working computer in our class, that has some important keys missing. With this new technology, we would have some Chromebooks that would allow Dr. L. to help us learn the best way we can, and even type all the letters of the alphabet.
This project is important to us because as students who are trying to improve our lives, we deserve computers that actually allow us to do research as well as type all the words in our research paper. Being so close to graduation, it is important that me and my friends learn real life skills that prepare us for our futures!
