My Students
You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.
- Clay P. Bedford
I have the privilege of working at a diverse high school in Montgomery County, MD.
On a daily basis, I am given the opportunity to teach both upper level IB Biology as well as introductory inclusion Biology.
I have students from all backgrounds, coming into my classes with varying levels of motivation and interest in learning Biology. I find, that when supported, encouraged, and curious, all of my students will work hard to be successful. One of the greatest rewards as a teacher, is seeing your most unmotivated students work hard, find success, and show pride in their work.
Both Biology courses that I teach provide a curriculum that is rigorous for the students enrolled. My goal is to design lessons that engage the students, introduce real-world connections, and leave the students wanting to learn more.
My Project
I am requesting 5 Chromebooks for use in my classroom. Chromebooks provide so many valuable resources.
Research: In all of my classes, students will participate in research; I believe this is an important life skill. While researching, students are also gaining digital literacy schools and preparing for life after high school.
Writing: While I teach science, my students are required to write papers. Receiving my feedback, and making edits, is a critical part of the writing process. This is made easier through the use of Google Docs, especially when students can work in class.
WebQuests/Virtual Labs: Chromebooks in the classroom allow for us to complete virtual versions of labs that we would not otherwise be able to complete. This helps students to see the real-world applications of what we are learning in class. Some examples include dissections and medical testing simulations.
Surveys: I like to gather data from my students using Google Forms. Chromebooks make these accessible.
At this time, we do not have enough Chromebooks or computers for each student to work independently.
This hinders the ability of students to develop skills, as working with partners is not always the best approach to certain activities.
Additional Chromebooks will make the activities listed above more common for my students and provide additional technological resources for students who may not have access to a computer at home.
