My Students
Our school is both a neighborhood school and a specialty program. My students include all 9-12 grade levels who are enrolled in my multi-grade level Honors Economics/Honors Government and AP Psychology courses. While some are identified as gifted, many are just hard-working and inquisitive. It's exciting how everyone comes together as part of a diverse and mixed-ability community of learners!
My students enjoy collaborative projects that use technology to engage one another in authentic learning experiences to build literacies while exploring the content.
My classes are available to students of various ability levels and demographic backgrounds. While some students attend Islands High because of zoning, others have applied as part of our Scientific Research and Animal Science speciality programs. Every student has something to offer in terms of interests, talents, and perspectives that they bring to the academic table.
My Project
Today’s students MUST be 21st century learners. That means that in addition to being technologically savvy, they must also be proficient in identifying issues that are worthy of further exploration, researching those issues, formulating their own conclusions, making predictions, and communicating throughout the process with others in their academic communities as well as the communities in which they live. The Common Core State Standards, effective use of classroom technology, and the Georgia Social Science Fair’s research process offer a way to teach students those critical skills necessary to be innovative learners for today and competitive workers for tomorrow.
Thus, through the use of Google Classrooms and the Georgia Social Science Fair project, students in my social studies classes will learn to empower themselves while collaborating with their peers while gaining the technological efficacy needed to function in the 21st century.
They will learn to scientifically research topics of inquiry in social studies, analyze those sources for validity, reliability and appropriateness to the topic. Students will write about about what they have found through their research, communicate their conclusions, and effectively cite their sources in the proper format. Additionally, students will gain practice in how to properly paraphrase and quote sources to avoid plagiarism. Students will be guided through the process of publishing their written work for peer review and collaboration, as is often done in the working world, and how to measure their finished product against a rubric as they will need to do in college.
While my students have been lucky enough to have been awarded ten new Chromebooks for our class projects, we still need a cabinet to charge them and keep them safe. The donors will not release our Chromebooks to us without one. Please help us meet our requirements so that we may move forward!
