Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Horace Mann once said,"A house without books is like a room without windows. No man has a right to bring up his children without surrounding them with books, if he has the means to buy them." Access to computers and the Internet is critical to learning in any 21st century classroom.

My classroom has a daily component that required access to a device.

We use our computers for sites such as Edmodo, make digital posters on Smore, and use the computers to access the Austin ISD cloud. The recent textbook adoption now allows me to easily flip my classroom. The cloud allows students to take advantage of an assortment of Google Apps to aid in learning. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Many of my students have access to technology and bring it to school to use in class. A modest number of my students do not own a cell phone or have access to computers or Internet at home. Having computers that remain in my class allows them to complete digital homework assignments after school in my classroom. My students are enthusiastic about digital projects and definitely appreciate my emphasis on a tech-based curriculum.

My Project

My students will use the requested ASUS Chromebook computers for a variety of purposes. Assessments are administered using Edmodo, which provides instant feedback to students and allows me to quickly plan interventions for students in need of reteach. Students will use Smore to create digital posters and get quick feedback playing engaging games on Kahoot and Quizlet. Our district uses cloud technology to connect students to variety of learning resources, including Google apps/classroom and our new BLEND subscription. The goal is to have students using technology as a creative medium by manipulating digital products to demonstrate understanding of major units throughout the year. My students are comfortable using consumer-ready technology but have a need to grow skills that made them creators of innovative technology or to allow them to use them as a creative medium for showing understanding of content knowledge. As we train our students to be successful in a competitive and global work place, it's imperative that we have instruct them with the proper tools.

My ultimate goal is for each of my students to access to a reliable computer.

As of now, I have 32 Chromebooks from previous fundraisers, but many of the older Chromebooks no longer have software support. Much of the technology at our school is limited in availability or has become obsolete and unreliable. An updated class set of Chromebooks will really allow my students to receive an individualized curriculum to serve their needs.
