Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Technology is embedded into every aspect of children's lives. They don't know a world without it. Knowing how to use technology effectively isn't just something that is "nice to know"—it is a must in today's world. The best way to learn how technology can work and help the world is to use it.
We are a middle class school located in a middle class neighborhood.
We currently have 125 6th graders among five classes. We are sharing 30 Chromebooks among all of the students. We have only one computer lab in the school. Each class gets 40 minutes per week in this lab. This is definitely not enough technology for the amount of use we are looking for.
Our students love using technology. When we use technology with these kids, engagement goes WAY up, no matter what the topic. They struggle with writing and anything that requires deeper thinking. Because of the number of students in our school, they have very limited access to other labs or technology beyond the Chromebooks we already have. This is not going to "cut it" in today's world.
My Project
The Chromebook will be used in our classrooms to allow the students to have access to Imagine Learning Math, a program that caters to the student's individual level to improve skills and challenge them. It will also give them access to common assessments that will prepare them for high stakes testing.
Technology encourages engagement, so a Chromebook will help our students become more interested in their learning.
This will build confidence and stamina in tasks that require deeper thinking. They will be able to do project-based activities on Google Classroom, as well as give them the ability to electronically do and turn in assignments using Google Classroom. A Chromebook will also give them the opportunity to draft, revise, edit, and publish writing that prepares them for upper-level writing classes and will give them access to STEM-based simulations and experiences.
