My Students
My students are 5th graders with a passion for learning. Unfortunately, they have the odds stacked against them. Our school and my students are incredibly resource deficient. My kids are growing up in abject poverty in an extremely violent neighborhood. 100% of the students at my school receive free or reduced priced lunch. Most of them are performing significantly below grade level. They are statistically some of the absolute "lowest" performing students in the state of Florida. They have to deal with hardship after hardship inside and outside of school, and yet, they are some of the most resilient and passionate kids you will ever meet.
These kids have a particularly special place in my heart because I've taught them before.
I am determined to make our time together more meaningful than ever and I refuse to let our lack of access to resources or historically low academic achievement hold us back. We can make huge strides this year, but it's going to take a village!
My Project
My goal is to have a class set of computers for my students to use in class for practice each day. Ideally, I'd be able to teach some lessons through technology if everyone had access to their own computer in addition to the skill-based programs we already use. We are really close to accomplishing that goal, but I need your help!
In the state of Florida, 5th graders are required to take their high-accountability state tests on a computer, which means the more exposure and practice we have on computers, the better!
I want my kids to walk into their tests with confidence and experience.
