Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have always known that somehow I had to give back to my community. When I became a teacher it was not difficult to decide where I would teach, I went back to my roots to teach in a low income school located in the heart of a Mexican Community. I teach in a 5th grade bilingual classroom, where the majority of my students come from homes with very little formal education. Although I wish I could bring all the needed resources to my school, I find it impossible.

In my classroom, there is never a minute of boredom.

The kids are highly active and involved in their learning, with your help, I will be able to bring seven Chromebooks into the classroom. When donors like yourself help out, you are making a world of a difference. Together we can make a difference in our children's lives.

My Project

Typing with two fingers takes forever. My students need to be ready for college and typing as well as creating exemplar pieces of writing is necessary. During the fifth grade students do a lot more writing than they did in the fourth grade. Among the writing being done are extended responses, reading response, five paragraph opinion pieces, five paragraph persuasive essays and research papers. Currently, the students write their essays in writing paper and in their writing notebook because of the limited amount of computers accessible. I would love to have seven Chromebooks, where my students can research and type their writing. I would create a writing station were my students can go, and type their writing pieces.

As a class, the students are still writing their essays like students did decades ago.

Seven Chromebooks will go a long way in my effort to update learning and teaching strategies. I would love to use these Chromebooks not only to create exemplar pieces but also to increase their computer and typing skills. Currently, the only time students use computers is during high stakes testing. Daily access to computers within the classroom will allow the students to become comfortable with the technology that will surround them as they reach later grades and beyond school.
