This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
You can make it possible for my students to experience academic success and gain valuable life application skills.
My amazing students are full of personality, but struggle with learning challenges including mild autism, intellectual disability, vision impairment, moderate/severe learning disability, deaf/hard of hearing, severe speech disorders and/or ADHD.
Our school is in a rural, agricultural area with many students living below the poverty line. My self-contained class is composed of 13 students in grades kindergarten, first, second and third grades. Most do not have computer/Internet access at home. The three student computers in my class are not connected to the Internet, have limited programs, and malfunction daily.
My Project
Websites/apps designed for students with disabilities will help my class be successful in areas such as appropriate social behavior, class management, and academics. Some examples: Nonverbal students will express needs and wants with communication apps. Students will be able to monitor their behavior, resulting in personal success. The most reluctant writers will be motivated to put thoughts down through typing instead of writing. More read-aloud options will encourage older students who read less than 5 words per minute.
In addition, Chromebooks will allow students to access online components of traditional curriculum individualized to their level. My students cannot do focus work for more than 5-10 minutes but they will be engaged in educationally relevant independent work while I teach smaller groups or even one-on-one. Web-based student files, programs/apps eliminate fights over what computer station to use. Wifi and an 8-hour battery allow them to be used anywhere on campus.
Though the families in my class don't have much, they have generously donated items for soldier care packages, and toys for children in crisis situations.
Your generosity in helping support my project will encourage my class to continue working hard and thinking of others as they gain skills needed for success in life.
