Chromebooks For Science

My students need two Chromebooks for fast, equitable access to current science information and typing up lab reports.

My Students

Teaching and learning science is so much more these days that just memorizing the periodic table and Newton's Laws. Students need to be able to find quality factual information quickly and efficiently. They need to be able to write clearly and present ideas or their findings using technology.

Ideally, I could say to my students..."BYOD" Bring your own device.

The fact of the matter is that there is still about 10-15% of our students that don't even have computer Internet access at home. Some have smart phones, some have no cell phone. This makes flipping the classroom problematic and collaborating difficult. What I'm hoping to do is level the playing field with added technology.

My Project

My students need Chromebooks for fast, equitable access to current science information and typing up lab reports. Chromebooks are quick. They don't need a bunch of other programs to get work done. You can boot them up and be finding information in a fraction of the time of other technology we have available at our school. This will allow us to follow great student questions instead of me getting back to them the next day. Additionally, Chromebooks also integrate with our probeware for electronic measurements of things such as temperature and pH. That data can then be brought into their lab report and used to support their findings in a lab.

Donations to this project will enable me to get more students comfortable with technology commonly used in current science labs.

My students will be able to integrate probeware with typed reports and submit them, all without using paper. We are not looking to convert fully to a paperless classroom, but to bring more use of technology to our students so they are comfortable with it and can leverage it to get more done.
