While my students are almost always "connected" via technology, they need training and experience in order to effectively use technology for academic aims.
We are a large, suburban high school with rural roots.
We are diverse (ethnically, socioeconomically and otherwise), and are becoming more so every year. As the only high school in the district, we have the advantage of being able to offer students many choices of courses. The challenge is to make those choices engaging and accessible to all students.
My Project
With the technology that surrounds my students, the challenge is not to find information; the challenge is what to DO with the information. My students need to be able to research current topics related to my science curriculum (genetically modified organisms, nuclear power, etc.), assess the validity of sources, communicate their findings to their peers, and participate in academic discourse about these complex issues. For example, my Chemistry students will use the results of their research to have a scientific conference-style poster session in which they teach each other about various topics related to nuclear chemistry, while my Biotechnology students will debate the necessity of genetically modified organisms in agriculture.
These Chromebooks will give my students the tools to become more tech and information savvy, so that they can find and analyze reliable information.
The computers will also allow them to collaborate with their peers to produce projects that explain and analyze complicated subjects.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
