My Students
"Are you ready Tigers?" is what I always ask my reading and writing students every day. They always answer with a resounding "Yes!" as they enter my class. Because of the destruction Hurricane Irma left our community and now with incoming displaced students due to Hurricane Maria, our students need all the positive reinforcement they can get.
My school has a high number of students who are ESOL, ELL and there are a few who are SPED and gifted.
Even though we have to cater for and adapt to such a wide range of learning needs, we know that all children will learn if given the right tools and technology (and teachers who care). As their reading teacher and school-wide reading coach, one of my main objectives are to facilitate the students I serve using the most up-to-date technology, while improving and enhancing their reading experiences.
My Project
I am currently the lead reading and writing teacher, and one of my main responsibilities is to introduce new writing strategies using technology. Also, I am expected to present the most current research-based writing strategies that my fellow teachers can implement in the classroom, to improve reading skills and learning gains.
Because of the hurricanes, resources and our budget were very limited, meaning that only the bare essentials were given to our classrooms.
This meant that teachers at our school had to become very creative with the little we had or go out of pocket apart from the Class Wallet budget we were given to work with.
The overall writing skills of my students will be built and enhanced by the use of the requested Chromebook during our weekly workshops, as our students are moving in a tech-savvy direction. We actually need at least 4 Chromebooks for group activity but I am asking for one per request as I have had trouble funding large and costly project requests.
Our school is also in the process of being a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) designated school; therefore, exposing my students to new technological advances using Chromebooks will also put them at a great advantage.
