My Students
"Why are we here?" is what I always ask my second-grade students every day. They always answer with a resounding, "To do our best and learn something new!" as they enter my class with smiles on their tiny faces.
Our elementary school has a high number of students who are first-generation immigrants from Haiti.
I teach two groups of second-grade classes; one group has ESE/special needs children and the other has some who are gifted.
In September, our school community was badly affected by Hurricane Irma's destruction, resulting in the basic amenities that my students need to prosper and succeed, not always readily available.
Even though we have to cater for and adapt to such a diverse range of learning needs, we strongly believe that all children will learn if given the right tools and technology. As their second grade teacher, my main objective is to enhance and improve their young learning experiences, especially when it pertains to their learning environment.
My Project
I am currently one of five 2nd-grade teachers, and one of my main classroom goals is to introduce new strategies using technology. Also, I am expected to expose my students to the most current research-based math and science strategies, in order to improve my students' learning gains.
The overall technology skills of my students will be built and enhanced by the use of the two requested Chromebooks as they are moving in a tech-savvy direction.
Our school is also in the process of being a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) designated school; therefore, exposing my students to new technological advances using Chromebooks will also put them at a great advantage.
