My students need 5 Chromebooks to take their learning to the next level while incorporating technology and promoting responsibility in order to take their learning above and beyond the usual paper and pencil academics.
My students are brilliant, kindhearted, ambitious dreamers. They never give up and our classroom motto is "YET". They can't do it....yet. They haven't learned it...yet. They strive for excellence. It is impressive given any student especially their age, but it is also worth noting that these students attend a Title One school. The school has an overwhelming statistic of free lunch and breakfast and most all students live below the poverty line. Their school is also considered a FOCUS school due to low test scores and a lack of parental involvement as a whole. Any average person could make predetermined judgments about these students, but you would honestly have to meet them to believe them! They have so much spunk, motivation, talent, humor, drive, and skill that I am in awe daily! They deserve THE WORLD!
My Project
"How could my students benefit from technology in the classroom?", I ask myself while typing this on the computer and sending it via internet. The irony is undeniable. We never escape technology as adults and as children, my students never want to! They can't get enough of technology whether it be videos, virtual field trips, typing essays instead of handwriting them, creating visual interactive presentations or just surfing the web! As a teacher trying to compete with the fast-paced, short attention-spanned world that is video games and movies, any technology is welcomed whole-heartedly!
So how do you give these technology crazed students what they want and what they need simultaneously?
Everyday the kids work in small groups in both English Language Arts and Social Studies. This is in an effort to help students who are on different learning levels get instruction that is tailored to their needs. If granted these portable laptops, students would be able to have a great deal of their independent work sent straight to their computers! What does this mean? It means that by using Google technology and other applications and resources, students will get exactly what they need individually, when they need it and most importantly how they want it-virtually! There is no doubt in my mind that these Chromebooks would be used daily as part of our classroom routine.
