Our students are vibrant fifth graders who want to know all about the world around them. Our school is in the Boreum Hill section of Brooklyn, not too far from the Brooklyn Bridge.
Our students are the United Nations, seriously.
They come from diverse cultural backgrounds: the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and many parts of Latin America. Some from families that have lived in the U.S. for many generations, and others whose families are recent immigrants. Our class community is very cohesive; we focus on helping each other, and learning from each other as well.
Our students recently created powerful speeches speaking their truth about how to make our society one they could be proud of. They studied the ideals, and the literary virtues of Dr. Martin Luther King's speeches, and came up with their own. They read their speeches in front of the Brooklyn Court Houses to a large audience, and here in our school parents and the larger school community. Needless to say, we are very proud of them.
My Project
In our class community, we value technology and the opportunities it provides in enhancing our learning and curiosities. Currently our public school has 5 fifth grade classes and 130 fifth graders that share 30 Chromebooks. This means that 130 students only have the chance to use a computer for one 45 minute period each day. We believe, in 2017-2018, that each child should have access to a computer throughout the entire school day. The goal of this project is to provide all 30 students in our class with a Chromebook computer to use as needed, in all content areas, everyday. Unfortunately, we are restricted in the quantity of Chromebooks we are permitted to ask for at this time. We hope to acquire 10 from this project and 20 more in the near future.
