Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

These students have a good heart and want to succeed. I was a substitute teacher at this school last year, and I had hoped that I could find a job here as a teacher. The parents are very willing to volunteer and take interest in what's going on in the classroom. This school is a Title I school and is in the middle of a neighborhood with a high rate of poverty. The majority of the school received free or reduced-fee lunch. As such, it is critical that the students have a safe, loving environment where they can learn effectively.

As a new teacher this year and seeing that these students need all the support that they can get, I want to be able to give that to them.

The majority of our students are fortunate enough to be bilingual in spoken English and Spanish. However, the literacy rates in their home language are generally low, leading the transfer to the second language of English to be quite difficult for most. These students need extensive support in their home language in order to be successful in mastering academic English.

My Project

Our students utilize a number of different online educational tools that support their learning and help me to see how I can better serve them. Our school uses websites such as iReady, Dreambox, Lexia, and Imagine Learning and students have full access to these websites.

Although our school has a computer lab, we lost our onsite tech due to budget cuts, and it has come at a cost this year.

Several computers are unusable (broken mice, keyboards, screens, etc.) which leaves many students with no computer access during the provided lab time.

Having these Chromebooks would be an incredibly valuable asset to our classroom and make our environment more equitable for all students!
