Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am so proud to teach a group of students that are dedicated to higher education! My students are a part of a rigorous program in which they have the opportunity to earn honors credit, and college credit!

In the heart of Chicago, my students go through a variety of neighborhoods to get to school at 7:45am, every school day.

Many of my kids will be the first in their family to graduate high school and go to college. They are hard working, bilingual, and passionate future leaders. I am equally dedicated to make sure that they get opportunities not normally presented to them, material not normally offered to them, and the support and encouragement they deserve.

My Project

We have set a big goal in our classroom- our priciest, but most exciting goal yet.

Having a set of Chromebooks will provide individual access to significant readings, the opportunity to engage in critical thinking, and the improvement of writing.

I would like to be able to set up individual accounts for students where they can access the everyday readings that are necessary for our learning. More importantly, students will be able to work on, and improve, their writing in our Social Studies class. Improving writing will only improve their success in college- a goal each student is working towards!

Recently, I took my amazing group to visit a very prestigious university in our city. I wanted to expose my students to choices and opportunities that they could very well be a part of. One of the valuable pieces of advice a professor gave them was to become better writers. Hearing this encouraged us to come back to class and work more rigorously at preparing ourselves for college and beyond. Additionally, thinking and writing like a historian allows for students to consider perspectives, become more empathetic, and effectively communicate.

Currently, my students have access to three computers in my classroom. These computers are extremely useful and an asset to our use of technology. However, if we are to align ourselves to 21st century learning, it is imperative that each student have access to a laptop during class. A few things that I would like to teach students is how to take lecture notes with a laptop, how to organize their drive as they would a binder, and how to work collaboratively while working remotely.

I truly believe that having access to a Chromebook, every day, will help improve reading, writing, and critical thinking.
