Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I Dual Language school. In 2017, 62.2. percent of our students are of Hispanic racial/ethnic background, while the state average is 25.7 percent. 51.1 percent of our students are considered low-income, 40.8 percent have limited English proficiency. Our school is considered a two-way dual language program, since our classrooms consist of native English and native Spanish speakers. They begin in Kindergarten and continue through fifth grade in our school. This coming school year our District is expanding the dual language program into the middle school.
The goal of our program is to develop bilingual, culturally sensitive, 21st century learners with a penchant for language.
There is an abundance of research showing the cognitive benefits of being fluent in multiple languages. Our students form a strong foundation in language, culture, and learning that will benefit them largely in their futures and ours.
My Project
We currently lack one to one computer access for our fifth graders. Both our 4th and 5th grade students, over 150 students and across six classrooms, share 85 chromebooks. Our goal is to acquire a set of 30 chromebooks to aid in having one-to-on access for our 5th graders.
As our society is dynamic, having one to one access to a computer will enhance a student's personalized learning experience and build their mastery of technology.
In addition, it will enhance their preparation for middle school, high school, college, and their careers.
We ask that you please consider our 5th grade project!
