Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This will be my first year teaching 5th grade after teaching 3rd grade for the previous four years. We will be pressing hard this year to improve reading, writing, math, science, and social studies skills. Students will begin with group work and move towards individual work. I have greatly increased the use of Web 2.0 technology in my classroom and hope to continue adding new tools throughout the year.
The favorite subject for my students has been science.
They love to do investigations and I have done my best to incorporate this into my weekly lessons. This year we will work on The Earth and Sun, Living Systems, and Mixtures and Solutions. Having moved grade levels I am looking forward to seeing the new experiments myself.
The students at my school live in a high poverty area. Last year the school was 90% free lunch because of the low income. The school is located in a high Hispanic neighborhood.
My Project
Fifth grade has an expansive curriculum which can benefit with technology integration. Multiple websites can be used to help reinforce lessons on literacy, math, research, and science just to name a few. With the enormous amount of tools available online, technology has become a center point in today's education.
Having dedicated Chromebooks for daily use in the classroom helps create a love for technology that will last students' entire academic career.
Student's benefit from collaborative learning and group projects while gaining hands on research experience. As students are guided in using technology to enhance lessons, entire worlds open up for them that may never be explored otherwise.
By having classroom dedicated Chromebooks, lessons become more flexible and opportunities for learning are created daily. By using web resources available, students gain a greater understanding of previously taught lessons. By continuing on with only textbook and paper lessons, potential opportunities for meaningful and lasting learning are overlooked.
