Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Chemistry to a diverse group of artistic students at a Title I visual and performing arts school in downtown Los Angeles. Students come to our school from all over the city to our public high school to receive a top notch education in both academics and their chosen art form (music, dance, visual or theater) and go on to study at some of the top academic colleges and art schools across the country. When my students start reading about all of the chemicals they come into contact with everyday, they are surprised, curious, and eager to learn more!
I am always looking for ways to incorporate technology into my classroom that will help my students be curious scientists and explore the world around them .
My Project
The 2 requested Chromebooks will be put to good use in my classroom. In our next unit, kids will be preparing for a debate on whether hybrid cars are worth it by researching the chemical reactions of a combustion engine versus a lithium ion battery in our unit on chemical reactions. By having easy access to the Chromebooks, students will be able to jump online and find information to support their pro or con argument. Since they will not find out which side they are arguing until the day before the debate, they will need to effectively prepare both arguments.
In our following unit, students will be learning about water quality and drought conditions in our area and researching the best set-up for a landfill to minimize groundwater contamination.
By having the Chromebooks available, students will not only be able to prepare their ideas for designing their mini-landfill models, but will also be able to read articles about how water quality affects different parts of the country and the world to get a global perspective. Having the Chromebooks allows us to utilize an online resource where I can assign articles to students based on their reading level to better meet their educational needs.
