My students need 5 Chromebooks for conducting research, sharing and receiving feedback on their writing, and mastering the necessary skills for media literacy and critical thinking in a technology-dependent world.
My students are 10th grade boys attending public school. They require much greater access to and greater familiarity with the power tools of the 21st century.
Two important concepts we grapple with in the classroom are the power of authorship and the value of consumerism.
I encourage my students to become both skillful in using technology and critical of how it gets used to disseminate, share and interpret information.
While we use the resources available to us for a variety of project-based learning activities, my students also need greater practice at developing skills such as sending formal email messages, conducting thorough internet research, evaluating sources, sharing information appropriately, and creating their own media.
My Project
Access to technology in the classroom means big ideas for learning become fully realized. While our access to laptops and computers is severely limited, we aim to use tools such as Google Docs in the classroom as a powerful teaching tool for students to share their writing and to give and receive feedback, and Google Present for students to work collaboratively and share their research with the class. We need 5 Chromebooks to help our classroom with the following projects!
We aim to use technology in the classroom to create book trailers and publish book reviews for the novels we read, to create games for vocabulary acquisition, for dissecting current events (from presidential elections to changes in the weather), and for studying how our cultures and individual identities are reflected in both popular forms of media and in the texts we read.
Media literacy is an essential part of our ELA classroom, with emphasis on the increasing need for students to understand their important roles in media production and consumption.
