My Students
My students are a group of 4th and 5th graders in a Title 1 school in Harlem, whose resilience and thirst for knowledge impresses me everyday. Despite the adversities they face, they are enthusiastic about learning and curious about the world!
However, the majority are significantly behind academically!
Currently, only 30% are reading at or above grade level. Of the 70% reading below grade level, the majority are reading at a 1st-2nd grade level, while the rest are reading a year behind.
My Project
My goal for this academic school year is to move 80% of my student's reading level 1 to 1.5 academic years. In doing so, students will have a greater chance at succeeding academically as they will be able to work with grade level text and expand their critical thinking skills. To accomplish my goal I am implementing two online reading programs.
Unfortunately, we don't have classroom computers to use online based programs.
The first program, HeadSprout, is a "research-proven kids' reading program that takes students on a digital journey to become better readers." The second, Accelerated Reader, is a reading motivational program in which students choose their own independent reading books and take short reading comprehension quizzes online.
