I teach high school English to students with learning and behavioral disabilities. My students all vary in their ability level. However, the ultimate goal is to increase all students literacy levels. This includes their reading, writing, and communication levels.
I teach a really dynamic group of students.
However, my students face a lot of challenges. My students all live in poverty and in a dangerous neighborhood. Despite these challenges, I have students who have the the desire to defeat these challenges. My students all have learning disabilities and currently all are performing below grade level. My students are visual learners and will benefit from a classroom that fulfills their preferred learning style.
My Project
Our school has recently implemented a school wide literacy program called Achieve 3000. It is an online literacy program that is supplement to classroom activities that will improve the reading skills of our students. With the current budget crisis in our district, our school will not have the funding to purchase more computers. We currently have computer labs but they are not always available due to scheduling issues or technology issues. Having a set of Chromebooks in the the class will eliminate the need for me to try and schedule time to use the computer lab. We will also be able to use the Chromebooks to help develop computer skills and to produce typed papers. I will be able to provide the students access to technology to do research and to receive and education equal to their peers in other school districts.
Chromebooks will allow my students access to literacy programs and develop computer and technology skills.
These skills will be transferable when students graduate and begin to seek employment or begin college. Most my students do not have access to personal computers at home and having the Chromebooks will provide them with the access.
