Chromebooks For A Broader Look At Learning

My students need 6 Samsung Series 5 Chromebooks for instant access to Google Apps for Education and learning websites such as Khan Academy.

My Students

Our motto is "Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader." We strive to teach all of our students that their voice makes a difference in our world. What our students learn today will stay with them throughout their lives. The Internet is the hands-on learning tool for our newest generation of learners.

My K-5th grade Title I public school is in a rural area located a few miles from the beautiful coast of NC.

We serve many English as a second language students. As in most rural communities jobs are scarce and money is tight. With state-wide district cuts we must make the most of our supplies. My 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Academically Gifted students are very aware of their coastal surroundings and work towards keeping their community environmentally clean for the abundant wildlife and natural resources. They recycle for the entire school weekly and want to learn about energy conversation. Technology is something missing in many of their homes mainly because we are in a rural area. My students come to school expecting the latest in educational technology.

My Project

I am asking for six Samsung Series 5 Chromebooks for my students to use in our Reading, Math, and Social Studies classes. We have one iPad in our class and use it continuously to project different apps onto our classroom wall. My students use Khan Academy and Learnzillion as regular learning tools. We store documents and powerpoints on our school Wi-Fi server. I assign math and reading assignments online for my students but they have limited opportunities to work independently or in groups. With the six Chromebooks my students could rotate working by themselves or with buddies, researching and learning using apps and educational websites. We are beginning a study of Greek Mythology and with the Chromebooks I could assign webquests for virtual learning field trips for my students. Using school email accounts, my students could email me their research using Google Docs. I have the knowledge to facilitate their online learning, but do not have the tools, such as computers.

My students are exposed to as much online learning as I can give them with the materials I have.

We have had success with math websites such as Khan Academy (a favorite of all my students) but they do not often have a chance to work independently using a computer. We are ready for online learning and these six Chromebooks would give us the opportunity to expand our rural classroom to the entire universe. Thank you for your help.
