This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds, with about 60% of our students receiving free lunch. My school is ethnically diverse and students speak a multitude of languages. As diverse as my students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. My students have a variety of learning styles and many receive services from ESL and SPED. One of the biggest concerns regarding the students in my school is their high rate of absenteeism. Many of my students take long breaks throughout the year to go back to their country. When they return to school, the gaps in their learning are evident. This results in low academic performance and a lack of interest in school.
My Project
Let’s face it, technology is a key component in today’s classroom. My students live in a digital age. In order to delve deeper into the curriculum and beyond, my students need Chromebooks. This will not only help reduce the digital divide, but help re-engage my students as well. Often times, my students are pulled out of school for extended periods of time. When they return, they are behind academically and disinterested. I feel that Chromebooks would not only help re-engage my students but they would help them catch up academically as well. My students are expected to work both independently and cooperatively with technology in my classroom. Unfortunately, I currently do not have enough chromebooks for my students. Students have to share the technology or are asked to bring it in from home. Due to the socio-economic makeup of my students, that is just not a realistic expectation.
Chromebooks in my classroom would re-engage students in the learning process which would ultimately help decrease absenteeism.
Students would use the chromebooks for a variety of activities including listening the the audio versions of grade level texts, collaboratively contributing to group writing tasks, engaging station work to develop vocabulary, and much much more! My students are surrounded by stressors that constantly pull their attention away from the classroom. Chromebooks would motivate students to focus on their classwork and explore their potential.
These chromebooks would honestly make a world of difference in the lives of my students. They would be given access to the digital world, which currently is limited due to the lack of resources. Ultimately, this will re-engage and encourage more of my students to come to school on a regular basis. This will ultimately reduce the high rate of absenteeism in my school.
