it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In the age of social media and digital entertainment, getting students engaged in the study of history and geography is a challenge. How do you make a 200 year old document interesting for young students who have entertainment at their fingertips? Let students create through digital media!
Nowhere in America are the struggles in our education system more visible than in our community.
South Los Angeles is home to the largest projects west of the Mississippi and it is where my students fight to survive. School for them is not an obligation, it is a sanctuary; education is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Surrounded by drugs, crime, and violence, my students are perseverance exemplified and hope personified. Yet the scars of dodging bullets and prison bars weigh heavily on them as they struggle to find the positive aspects of our society, while they see their community drowning. Our students carry burdens that often force education to the furthest reaches of their minds, replaced instead by trauma and pain. Despite falling through the cracks, my students remain optimistic and determined to navigate the system that has thus far disenfranchised
My Project
Who needs full desktops and Ipads when you have a simple chromebook, google drive, and the world wide web? From online projects, blogs, and email, to essays, financial aid, and college apps, these chromebooks will help my students access the resources that have now become essential in our society.
My students do not have computers at home.
They rely heavily on the resources we provide them and these chromebooks can and will absolutely make the difference between them accessing college pathways or falling through the cracks. Each chromebook will be used daily by 10-20 students and provide them with the opportunities that they have so far, been denied.
