This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are as diverse as New York City, in race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and ability. Our school demographics are 62% Hispanic, 28% Black, 5% Asian, and 3% White, with 85% of students receiving free or reduced price lunches. My students come to school every day from all five boroughs with various needs, persevering against all the challenges life has thrown at them.
I have students who come to school with so little, students coming to school without breakfast, and without backpacks.
Some cannot live at home with their parents, and some do not even have a place to call home. Our students deal with many challenges, including mental health issues, domestic violence, and pregnancies. I want to be able to use my time with my students to provide them all the education opportunities they deserve.
My Project
My school lacks many of the supplies that you would normally see in a science classroom. Because of the lack of supplies, equipment and infrastructure, we cannot do many traditional science labs with chemicals and microscopes and dissections. In order to make science labs interesting and attention grabbing, we need to get outside of the classroom, if not literally, than figuratively by getting online with Chromebooks.
With many diverse, engaging, discovery based labs online, my students have the opportunity to access and explore science content in brand new ways.
By providing my students with Chromebooks, the sky is the limit for the different STEM fields they can explore. Whether it is working with RNA scientists at Stanford through PBS NOVA labs or analyzing biodiversity with live data on bird populations in Puerto Rico, Chromebooks will allow my students to explore all the possibilities science has to offer. Once they see all the engaging and interesting ways they can interact with science and scientists, the more confident they will feel about their science skills and their future possibilities in STEM fields. Today they may be a high school student in a virtual lab, but tomorrow they may be a highly trained researcher in a lab of their own.
