My Students

I teach at a large Illinois inner city elementary school. I teach 6th grade social studies, science, reading, writing and math. My students are from low income families and are all eligible for free lunch.

Because of drastic budget cuts, I am unable to have a technology center in my classroom.

I would like for my students to have access to the latest technology in order to develop their research skills. I generally use the overhead projector (a dinosaur in the technology industry) and a LCD projector. While I am able to reach all of my students at once with these two resources, my students are not able to explore, research, and develop their own technology skills.

My Project

If you fund my grant, I will be able to have a small technology center for my students. There, my students will be able to conduct research on such topics as global warming and current events. My students will also be able to prepare research papers which are due twice each semester. While these Chromebooks do have limited storage space, they offer access to the Google Cloud, which has unlimited storage capacity. My students will be able to work in teams using these Chromebooks and complete assignments such as ecological succession and teenage obesity. My students will be able to seek out background information relating to the novels that we read. For example, they will be able to watch videos on the Badlands and Mount Rushmore (from the book Walk Two Moons). My students will also conduct a fact-finding web quest on the underground railroad (from the book The House of Dies Drear).

These Chromebooks will also help my students with standardized testing.

My students are required to take three different standardized tests. These tests are now completed on the computer. The use of these computers in my classroom will relieve any test anxiety associated with computer usage. My students and I would be very grateful if you are able to help them succeed with technology. With your generosity, my students will gain a technology foundation that will last a lifetime.
