Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a Middle School General Education and Special Education social science educator, my primary goal is to get my students to think like historians and have fun while doing it. One of the ways in which they do that is by looking at various sources, many of which are found on the Internet.
All my students are digital natives, meaning that they were born in a time after cell phone and Internet usage became commonplace; as a result, the internet is something that they are very used to but perhaps may not be able to navigate critically.
My students are bombarded with information from various sources but perhaps might not be able to assess it critically. Regardless, critical analysis of information is something that will prove essential throughout their lives as we continue to move on in this information heavy world.
Students will use these 4 Chromebooks in order to expose themselves to the wider world around them and to able to develop the skills that they will need in order to critically assess the information that the world around them will bombard them with. Currently, the Chromebooks in use in my class have many missing components of the laptops, such as keys and cracked screens. This makes it difficult for students to use for research.
Using new Chromebooks, my students will be able to look at contrary perspectives on various historical issues, assess the validity of historical claims, and all the while practicing and developing the essential critical thinking skills that they will need to navigate the world around them. This will be extremely important and help develop a world with critical citizens which will be extremely important to the maintenance of representative democracy in the 21st century.
