Chrome Books for Curious Learners Part 2

My Students

My students are a curious bunch of 2nd graders who love to ask questions. With 2 more Chrome Books they will be able to inquire about topics we are studying, collaborate with one another, and listen to videos and books.

When I think of my students, I think of 25 children with so much potential to succeed.

I love how they wonder about topics that not only affect them and their community but the world around them. They are scientists, authors, environmentalists, etc... As they learn about different topics through our units of inquiry, they ask questions and want to find the answers right away. They know how to use the technology that we do have to do their research. My urban Colorado students come from diverse home environments. Approximately 10-20% of my classroom speak languages other than English at home and around 1/3 qualify for our free and reduced price lunch program. Most of my 2nd graders have been in our school community since ECE and intend to continue on through 5th grade. A slight majority have Internet access at home and most have tremendously supportive family members who contribute regularly to our school events.

My Project

After a few weeks studying a topic, my students think of ways to take action. Having more computers in our classroom will give them access to research leaders around the world, force and motion, weather, communities, habitats, nutrition, authors, and many other topics of study. They will be able to collaborate with one another and use their reading and communication skills to discover new information. They will also be able to listen to books, type final copies from stories they have written, and practice math skills. Right now I have 9 computers for students to use. Most of my groups have 5-6 students. There aren't enough resources for them to be independent. Having 2 more Chromebooks will allow that independent time and more manageable small group work.

This project will enhance what we already do in my classroom tremendously.

My students will be given the opportunity to use the technology of today and be able work on their 21st century learning skills. Since some of students don't have access to technology at home, this will give them a chance to keep up with their peers.
