This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How can we prepare middle schoolers for the changing technologically advance world without the proper equipment? There are so many advancements in technology, where technology is always redefining itself to further discover how to make basic and complex tasks more efficient.
I serve students who have learning and emotional disabilities as well as English Language Learners (ESL).
Majority of my students live in low-income neighborhoods and or shelters in Bronx, New York. Although many of my students have trouble-some home life, they strive to become better readers and writers through rigorous reading and writing curriculum. Through all effort comes struggle, where many students struggle with phonetic and linguistic awareness as seen in their varied reading levels. Having students with reading levels that range from below, on or above reading level creates the challenge of helping all students achieve grade appropriate reading and writing skills. Thus, I use technology to aid in students’ assessments and classwork. My students utilize sites like, MyOn.com, MyCapstonelibrary, NewsELA to appeal to their current reading lexiles to learn how to annotate and engage in close reading activities. My students also learn to write expository essays and design persuasive slide presentations through google classroom.
My Project
Our classroom currently has outdated laptops that does not work efficiently. Many of the laptop batteries are not in working condition or only work while laptop is plugged into an outlet, which does not account for the laptops that just does not work. Unfortunately the poor array of laptops means that my class of thirty-five students cannot have working laptops to work effectively on classwork. Asking other colleagues to borrow laptops is not a great solution if they also experience the same concerns. There is no money in the budget to fix, replace or purchase laptops for my classroom. Luckily, the Chromebooks would help my students to maximize the use of our forty-five minute period blocks to read wide array of fictional or non-fictional texts and write expository essays.
