My classroom is a collection of significantly diverse learners who each have very special qualities requiring 1:1 to 1:3 instruction in the areas of academics, functional skills, behavioral skills, and social skills. The majority of my students require frequent sensory breaks and lack the communication skills needed to express their wants and needs. Noises can be difficult so having a calming environment is beneficial to them and hands-on learning is beneficial.
My classroom consists of 10 wonderfully, energetic students with Autism, and being moved into Prek after 5 years is going to be challenging!
Sensory input is essential in my classroom and my students need the extra input after being home for a year. All of my students come from a low socio-economic background, so they often have difficulties acquiring therapeutic items which help fulfill their sensory needs. More than 50% of the population receives free school lunch.
My Project
The materials I am requesting for my students will enable them to work on fine motor skills while learning how to cut! We just need your help in getting everything through our door! The laminating paper will help preserve the students work, books that they make and things they cut so the students can hang them in the classroom or take them home. The tongs and scissors with help my students develop their fine motor skills while they work on projects.
The donations to this project will help to my students developed and tweak their fine motor skills.
For many of the children, this is their first experience in a public school classroom. Many children have never used scissors or tongs to work on projects and crafts. While we practice "Chop Chop, Thumb on Top" I would love my students who have difficulty with their fine motor to be able to cut their projects independently. This will provide teacher-directed practice which will help increase their language skills and prepare them to use the materials independently in their learning centers.
More than half of students from low‑income households
