Choose Your Own Adventure Books for Low-Income Students
My students need access to hi-lo (high-interest, low-level) books that engage them in reading. I believe these Choose Your Own Adventure books will help them become interested in reading.
A large majority of my students come from low-income families. Most of them are reading below grade level; some are even reading at an elementary level.
They need access to books that are high-interest but at a level that they can comprehend.
The more they read, the better they will get at reading. However most of the time, they get frustrated when they read a text, which causes them to give up on reading altogether.
They have high aspirations for their futures, but they will only accomplish their goals if they become better readers and writers.
My Project
Having access to hi-lo books will develop reading skills that my student are lacking. Because they have difficulty with reading, everything they do in school (content classes, standardized tests, etc) is difficult for them.
Engaging students in reading is imperative to their success!
They need to build their reading stamina and interest levels. We all know that the more they read, the better readers they will be.
By putting themselves into the story (and choosing what happens next), I believe the Choose Your Own Adventure Books will help them develop their skills and become better readers. Once they see their reading skills improve, their confidence will improve as well.
