My Project
My inclusive preschool classroom serves children with and without disabilities in the same space. This means that all of my students with disabilities get their special education services in a full classroom and participate in all of the same learning and activities as their peers and classmates without disabilities.
In order to access the curriculum and participate in all learning activities, my preschool students with disabilities often need accommodations and special materials.
Some of the materials on this list will accommodate specific children with Autism who have sensory needs. A bean bag chair, soft carpet, and rocking chairs will be used in a calm down, quiet area of the room equipped with soft furnishings and soothing materials to help students de-escalate when upset. A compression vest helps students who seek the sensory input so that they are able to participate successfully in small and large group settings with their peers. The play materials will be used to increase peer interaction among the students. The doll house, game, blocks and train track will allow students to play cooperatively and will foster crucial communication, turn taking, and social skills. The lacing beads and color tubs will allow the students to learn math and literacy skills with hands on materials.
Studies show that inclusion benefits both children with and without disabilities. These materials will help ensure our classroom is truly inclusive and accessible to each student.
