This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The novel, Wonder, will be an extremely useful tool to not only teach and practice literacy skills, but also to learn compassion for others and how showing kindness benefits everyone. The story is about a boy with physical abnormalities entering a school for the first time as a fifth grader. It focuses on the trials he faces and the friendships he develops. It shows his struggles through his eyes as well as those of his friends and family. As my students read and study the novel, they will learn about the benefits of being kind to others for those around them as well as for them individually. This understanding will hopefully allow them to make changes to the way they treat others. On a larger scale, hey will be completing an end of unit project demonstrating an idea for encouraging and showing compassion and kindness to others that can be implemented in a school or other social setting. This project, as well as the students daily actions and experiences, will allow me to measure their understanding of compassion and showing kindness to others.
