Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a teacher in a low-income school. My students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. But despite these challenges, they strive to come to school as much as they can. My school’s attendance rate is 91.9%. The demographic at my school is: 69% Hispanic/Latino and 29.5% Black or African American. The percentage of Limited English Proficient students is 25.2% and 91.4% of the population is entitled for free lunch.
My students are my superheroes.
They motivate me and inspire me to be a better teacher. They are funny, inquisitive, respectful and bright. This year we want to use the novel Wonder by RJ Palacio. As 5th graders and soon to be in middle school, I think this novel will serve as a stepping stone for understanding self-acceptance, self-respect, self-worth and the importance of being kind.
My Project
As English Language Learners, my students need that extra reading support. Many are encouraged to practice reading/comprehension strategies such as generating a list of unknown words as they read, rereading/visualization, read aloud etc. As eager as they are to learn and/or enhance their new language, many are shy and develop reading/language skills as they freely do so at home. Reading at home and with family members is of paramount importance. By giving my students the opportunity to have their own copy, they can take it home and spend the time they need to fully understand the text, do homework, and as a result, successfully participate in class.
Helping my class with this project will give them the chance to read and learn about acceptance but most importantly they will learn about the act of kindness and selflessness; traits so difficult to find nowadays.
I hope to provide my students a successful and insightful academic year.
