My Project
I teach a class of bright, energetic 5th graders who are growing not only as readers and writers, but as compassionate young people. Many of my students come from diverse backgrounds and face challenges at home or in the community, yet they show up each day ready to learn, support one another, and do their best.
These students are at a pivotal age where stories can have a lasting impact—not just academically, but emotionally.
They are beginning to form their values, their voice, and their understanding of the world. I want to give them literature that encourages kindness, empathy, and courage.
We’re hoping to get 20 copies of the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio, a powerful story about a boy named Auggie who was born with a facial difference and is attending school for the first time. Told through multiple perspectives, Wonder opens the door to discussions about acceptance, inclusion, and the importance of choosing kindness.
This book is the perfect tool to help students build empathy while also improving reading comprehension and critical thinking. We will read the novel together, engage in group discussions, write reflective journal entries, and connect the story to real-life scenarios. Having their own copy allows students to annotate, take pride in their reading, and revisit meaningful passages at their own pace.
What We Need:
20 paperback copies of Wonder by R.J. Palacio
The Impact:
Your support will help my students experience a book that encourages them to look beyond appearances and treat everyone with compassion. Wonder is more than just a novel—it’s a message we can all live by: “When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.”
