This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach at 3 different schools in a lower socio-economic status area. My students currently, when we perform for the community or at future festivals, wear all black, but not all students have formal attire and they feel out of place. The choirs also don't look as uniform and professional as other school choirs that have school outfits. I am working on building an outfit inventory for each school, but am starting with B. high school.
My students selected the attire they would feel confident performing in.
They selected the vest ensemble option (pants, shirt, vest, & tie) and the Valerie Dress. We believe that these outfits will withstand the test of time, and students 20 years from now will want to wear them as well.
My students are extremely excited to look more professional and it will help them feel more confident performing on stage, and in the community.
This is a project that will need to be done again until we have enough outfits to fit everyone in the choir program for the coming years. Eventually, we will have enough of each size that every student can check in/out an outfit that fits their body type, and that they are comfortable in.
More than half of students from low‑income households
