Choice Time in Kindergarten: A Daily Dose of Fun!

My Project

Kindergarten is a special time for children. For many, it is their first experience in a formal school setting and the first time they are away from their caregivers for an extended period of time each day. With the COVID-19 pandemic, many children have not spent time in daycare or preschool, so Kindergarten is their first large group social experience.

My Kindergarten students are Emerging Multilingual students who speak a variety of different languages at home.

English is new for them, and by the end of the day, my students are tired! Kindergarten is hard work, and it is even harder when you are listening to a new language all day! That is one reason why Choice Time is so important in my classroom. Choice time gives my students the opportunity to socialize, play, share their creativity, and learn in a way that makes sense to them. It also provides opportunities for learning important social skills like sharing, taking turns, and how to be a good friend.

These materials from Lakeshore will be used during Choice Time in our classroom. Having a variety of options for students to choose from gives children the chance to learn more about themselves and what they like to do. Choice Time turns play into learning opportunities and having structured unstructured time each day is a great way for our youngest learners to work on their communication skills and to feel comfortable in an educational setting.
