I work in an urban K-5 school. The students are from a disadvantaged socio-economic community in an urban school district. FCES is a title one school. I teach all subject content areas for second grade. The school has an enrollment of 220 plus students. 100% of the students in the school receive free breakfast and free lunch.
I would like a "reading nook" for my students.
This would encourage the students to become better readers. The students are accustomed to being at their desk. They will have an opportunity to use one of the flexible seating options to read and or complete a writing activity. They may sit alone or spend time with a peer student reading to them.
With this project I am going to challenge the students to become "The Reader of the Month". I believe that this will help with attendance/tardiness. If they come on time they will have that extra time to spend in the nook. I'm also hoping that the students will become much more engaged during reading time.
I will continue to push my students to be the best readers daily!
