Help me give my students a cage for their new class pet! My students created a Finding a Friend project and we have settled on a Chinchilla, now we just need a home for our new friend!
My students have worked extremely hard on their quarter-long student-centered project. They fully had the choice and voice to pick a pet (or no pet), and to convince me as a skeptic why we should get one.
This project incorporated multiple subjects, targeting social-emotional learning, math, science, and ELA.
They first began researching the benefits of pets, then used that information to research which animals would be a good fit. They had to look at animal behavior and needs in science, create a cost analysis in math, write a persuasive essay in ELA, and finally, they gave a Shark Tank-type pitch in front of a panel of judges from both our school and the community.
After deciding on a chinchilla, the students came up with the idea of creating a DonorsChoose project to fundraise for a cage so we can ensure the chinchilla has a safe environment while aiding our social-emotional learning and science knowledge in class.
