Children's First Stories: Encouraging Kindergartners!

My project needs a heavy duty writing center especially designed for young children.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Hedgepath's classroom raised $730

This project is fully funded

I teach kindergarten in a K-6 school with about 900 students in central Alabama. We serve a diverse group of students from all income levels. Our new kindergartners typically enter school with a variety of experiences or lack of experiences with writing. Some children have many resources at home so writing is not new to them. They have white boards, crayons, chalk, etc. at home. Other children come to us with little to no experience with writing. They have had little opportunities to practice writing and have no writing supplies at home. These students often can be 2 - 3 years behind the other students with fine motor skill development. This project is designed to provide more high quality enriching and fun opportunities for writing at school, especially for students who are younger, have less experience, get little help at home and need extra opportunities to write at school to become successful story writers. Of course, both fiction and nonfiction stories will be encouraged as they are introduced to the students in whole group lessons. In the last few years, Alabama students in grades 5 and 7 have taken a state-mandated writing assessment. This high-stakes testing has required all elementary grades to do a better job at preparing children in becoming competent and imaginative writers. Also, a strong emphasis on vocabulary will be emphasized with this project as this is a need with many Alabama students. After teaching young children for 17 years, I have learned the importance of giving young children time to explore reading and writing on their own. It is so important for them to discover the wonder of creating their own ideas independently and writing those ideas down as stories. The sense of satisfaction (not to mention the writing practice) they get is so valuable! The most popular item in my writing center for years has been simple blank books cut in many shapes and sizes. This year, the writing center was definitely the most popular place in my room but it is cramped and unorganized. We made the best of it but this proposed writing center would be so much more inviting and age-appropriate for the students! The requested heavy duty writing center would provide a designated place for writing in my classroom. I will use instructional monies to stock the center with markers (Kindergartners LOVE markers), colored pencils, chalk, chalkboards, blank books (for them to write in), a variety of stamps, alphabet stamps, sentence strip words, Frye/Dolch word lists, tracing manipulatives, pencils, colored pens, environmental print, family photo albums, left-to-right direction manipulatives, classroom books, white boards, newspapers, magazines, rhyme/poetry books, word magnets, Expo markers, different size notebooks, Post-It notes, recipe cards, stationery, plain paper, lined paper, receipt books, menus, dictionaries and anything else I can think of that will encourage them to want to write their own stories. I always like to get parents involved in new projects in my classroom. This year, I am going to invite parents to visit my classroom periodically during center time to assist in the writing center. I think this would show both the students and parents how truly important writing is in today's world. A poster of developmental writing stages will be included in the center so parents can chart their children's progress. To encourage young children to learn to love to write early in their school experience, please help me with this project! Your support is greatly appreciated by our children and their families and especially by me! Thank you so much for your consideration in investing in the educational future of Alabama's children.
