Children's Engineering Challenges

My students need real-world tools and supplies such as a rolling trimmer, cutter, and hot glue gun to use as we incorporate more hands-on, STEM projects into our math and science curriculum.

My Students

Our third grade classroom is very diverse. We come from a variety of social, economic, religious, and racial backgrounds. We speak several different languages, and we perform at different academic ability levels.

Despite all the ways we are different, we share many things.

We are all exited by learning. We are all curious, we like to ask many questions, and we celebrate when we learn new things. Most importantly, we work hard together by using everyone's unique talents to support all of our varying needs. We know our teamwork is what will make our dreams work!

My Project

By donating to this project, my students will have more exciting and challenging opportunities to explore our Virginia Math and Science Standards of Learning. These tools and materials such as a rolling trimmer, cutter, and hot glue gun will enable the students to address STEM assignments in a fun, collaborative way. It will encourage them to think "outside the box" for a variety of solutions, and then enable them to test some of their ideas. They will do this while also learning basic carpentry skills like measuring and leveling, cutting heavy paper and boards, hammering nails, and using screwdrivers (with their goggles on, because safety is key)!

When doing this, I know my students will experience success with the concepts and skills we are working to master, but I also hope they learn what to do when their first ideas will not solve the problems.

I want them to be able to see failure as an important part of the problem solving process, and start to understand that real learning comes from trial and error, from taking calculated risks, and from persistence. I believe these tools will teach my students valuable lessons that go beyond state standards and will better prepare them for success in the future.
